If an elevator is broken at a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) stop, the following actions and information are available.
What happens if the elevator is broken at a CTA stop?
- Elevator Status Information:
- The CTA maintains an Elevator Status Line available 24/7 at 1-888-YOUR-CTA (968-7282). You can get the elevator status by pressing 5 when the prompts begin.
- This information is also posted in writing at each accessible rail station and at common transfer points.
- You can also sign up for text or email updates for elevator service changes through CTA Updates.
- Information about elevator status is displayed on informational boards at rail stations and available on the CTA’s website.
- Alternative Accessible Routes:
- If the elevator is out of service, you might consider taking an alternative accessible route using the CTA’s network of accessible trains and buses.
- All CTA bus routes use accessible buses equipped with lifts and ramps.
- Paratransit Service: You can make travel arrangements through CTA’s Paratransit service if the elevator repair affects your travel plans.
- Reporting Concerns and Feedback: You can contact CTA Customer Service with questions, feedback, or concerns about accessibility issues, including elevator malfunctions. You can reach them by phone at 1-888-YOUR-CTA (968-7282), or email at feedback@transitchicago.com.
- Maintaining and Repairing Elevators: The CTA is committed to making all stations accessible and conducts ongoing maintenance, repair, refurbishment, and upgrades to existing elevators. They have also developed the All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP) with a goal of making all remaining non-accessible rail stations vertically accessible by 2038.
- Emergency Situations: In an emergency situation where safety is threatened, call 911 immediately. If on a train, you can also use the Passenger Intercom Unit (PIU) to speak with the operator. At a station, use the emergency call box or press the Customer Assistance button on the booth.
